ABOUT THE COMPETITION
The South Dakota Society of Professional Land Surveyors (SDSPLS) will send a South Dakota Team (4 students, 1 coach, and 1 chaperone) to the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) Student Competition, hosted by NSPS and the Young Surveyors Network (YSN).
WHO PARTICIPATES
Student teams from surveying programs nationwide (Bachelor’s & Associate’s degree programs). This year's team members are: Noah Kieckhefer, Colten Nelson, Sawyer Kokenge, Ethan Spors, Grant Kurkowski (Chaperone), & Paul Letsche (Instructor)
WHAT THEY DO
Students compete in hands-on challenges that showcase technical and problem-solving skills:
- Monument Hunt: Locate historic survey monuments using GIS tools.
- Leveling: Perform a three-wire level loop graded on accuracy.
- Traversing: Complete a traverse using modern equipment and classic tools.
- Boundary Reconnaissance: Calculate and locate points from deed info using GPS.
PURPOSE
To bridge classroom learning with real-world application and highlight student talent.
